A FAMILY TRADITION FOR MORE THAN 160 YEARS, THE TAILORED MADE UMBRELLA IS AN AUTHENTIC MADE IN ITALY EXPERIENCE OF LUXURY
Francesco Maglia, a well-known Milanese umbrella firm founded in 1854, has a legendary heritage that has been passed down from generation to generation.
Francesco Maglia is the luxury manufacturer par excellence, evoking the past while allowing you to experience the modern in a vintage-inspired style.
Francesco Maglia began working as an apprentice in the region of Brescia in 1850, and in 1854, at the age of 18, he became partner in the firm G Comini & Co. He began his professional career by moving to Pavia, where he stayed for 4/5 years before relocating. In 1876, the company was founded in Milan in Corso Genova, where it remained until 2001. Unfortunately, due to Allied bombardment in Milan between 1942 and 1943, the company had to relocate, only to return permanently.
Spring Drive. The perfect way to experience the nature of time.
We are now at the fifth generation, with Giorgio Maglia and his son Francesco running the business.
Francesco Maglia, 31, sixth generation representative, is happy to be able to pass on the enthusiasm and care for the realization of every industrial process that has been passed down through the family history.
Francesco Maglia returns to Milan after completing a course in law and working for a few months in a London umbrella shop, where he learns sales skills and becomes acquainted with clients.
Craftsmanship and careful selection are at home for Francesco, who opened for four years in 2016 with two partners a new shopping location in Cernobbio, the pearl of Lake Como. Selling high quality handcrafted items and achieving great success, with an important pre-covid store closure.
In August of 2019, Francesco takes over the reins of the company, where he will develop a new e-commerce project, with the goal of launching the first ever online store by 2020.
Since then, the Maglia umbrella’s have gained an international following, with customers hailing from New Zealand, the Philippines, South America, and even a small town in Alaska.
The umbrellas are entirely handcrafted and suggest a diversity of designs, craftsmanship, and eco-sustainability that are entirely Made in Italy. The range includes over 400 models and offers its customers a tailor-made service where they may express their particular style by selecting the fabric.
The collection includes a variety of colors and styles to brighten up rainy days, as well as a variety of woods and handles.
90% of the fabric is manufactured within the family business in a firm in Como, where they work with looms for ties and, with the help of one of the most advanced companies, they treat the fabrics with a resin technique in order to make them waterproof. The styles range from traditional Scottish to plain colours, polka dots, and houndstooth, and are made of polyester, poly-cotton, or cotton, yarn-dyed or jacquard, as well as light fabrics to make the parasols so appealing to the oriental women.
All of this transforms the craftsmanship of an old profession into a range of old talents and trades with the use of contemporary technologies. Because of its tremendous resistance, brass is the primary and basic material used in the development of a custom umbrella, whereas plastic is completely absent.
The Francesco Maglia business is located in Via Ripamonti 194 in Milan, where you can book an appointment to create a personalized umbrella and have a more unique than rare experience while rediscovering the “Old Crafts” of the past.
