    Different Encounters: Begüm Khan x Sinan Tuncay

    Jewelry designer Begüm Kıroğlu and artist & director Sinan Tuncay teamed up for a limited edition jewelry design with video art and prints added to Begüm Khan’s recently launched Protector Eyes collection. 

    The New York City-based multidisciplinary artist Sinan Tuncay took his first step into the magnificent world of Begüm Khan with video art and prints. In a short film created for the new collection, Sinan Tuncay wears various Begüm Khan jewelry, taking on a different persona with each design. The last piece he wears brings Begüm Khan’s iconic frog figure to life.

    This encounter manifests itself in a limited edition design, which will be featured in the new Protector Eyes collection Following the Chain Reaction and Platinum collections, the Protector Eyes jewelry line joins the Begüm Khan designs created with gems, crystals, and bronze and gold-plated materials. The bugs and eyes, believed to bring luck in Egyptian and Turkish cultures, are reimagined with new forms and interpretations, while staying true to the brand DNA. The designer describes the six-piece special collection as avant-garde, contemporary, also very Turkish, orientalist, mystical, and exotic. The collection, taking its name from the protective associations of the eye, appeals to bold, wise, strong, and sophisticated women.

    The designer Begüm Kıroğlu believes in mind power and energy and thinks the bug, eye, and turtle figures bring her luck. The avant-garde style and iterative use of the bug and the eye elevate the collection’s value for the designer. The large chic eye- shaped necklace, her favorite piece in the collection, supports her “More is more” approach, evoking a sense of walking inside a magical circle.

    About Begum Khan 

    Created by Begüm Kıroğlu in 2012, the Begüm Khan brand offers authentic designs that combine mystical Eastern influences with modern elegance. Born into a family of Ottoman art collectors in the ancient imperial capital of Istanbul, Begum cultivated her love of beautiful things from an early age. After studying luxury brand management at the Bocconi University, Milan, her passion for creativity took Begum to Shanghai, where she completed a master’s degree in Chinese culture and art at the Fudan University.     About Sinan Tuncay

    Born in 1986 in Istanbul, artist and director Sinan Tuncay received his BA from Sabanci University in Visual Communication Design and his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in Photography, Video and Related Media. His work was exhibited internationally and was acquired in private collections and by public institutions such as the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, Musée de l’Elysée and Odunpazarı Museum of Modern Art. His first solo exhibition, “I’m Sorry, Leyla” opened in New York in 2016. The same year, he was awarded a fellowship by the New York Foundation for the Arts. The acclaimed music video projects he designed and directed for Turkish recording artists Sezen Aksu, Mabel Matiz and Gaye Su Akyol were awarded ‘The Best Music Video of The Year’ by prestigious institutions. His latest solo exhibition “Reserved for the Men I’ve Never Became” was opened in Istanbul in 2019. Sinan lives and works between New York City and Istanbul.
