An unforgettable weekend as the Goodwood Revival celebrates 25 years

    About the Goodwood Revival
The Goodwood Revival is the world’s greatest historic motor race meeting, and the only sporting event of its kind to be staged entirely in a period theme. More than just an unrivalled weekend of historic racing, it is an immersive celebration of a less disposable world, where “make do and mend” was a way of life rather than a casual slogan.

The Revival is, at its heart, a celebration of craftsmanship and sustainability, from an age when possessions were made to last and be cherished. It promotes a thoroughly modern ethos – to “reduce, reuse, repair, restore and recycle” – in the most authentic way possible. All the cars are original, having been lovingly maintained since new, many of the outfits have been handed down through generations, and even the retailers specialise in pre-owned artefacts – everything from clothes and accessories to automobilia and books.

    Timeless Racing
For the first time in the Circuit’s 75-year history, a race was run entirely on sustainable fuel. The Fordwater Trophy saw a grid of 30 pre-1966 Porsche 911s battle it out on the iconic Goodwood track on Saturday afternoon. The race featured a host of notable cars and drivers including Jenson Button, Tom Kristensen, Mark Webber and Goodwood’s very own Earl of March and Kinara, Charlie March (Lord March). Driving car number 44, Lord March joined the dramatic and exciting race, with Andrew Jordan and Matthew Holme taking home the trophy.

Goodwood was also delighted to host the Rudge-Whitworth Cup which paid homage to the centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with a grid of Alfa Romeos, Bentleys and Bugattis. Taking centre stage, Jacky Ickx starred as the Grand Marshal, waving the French Tricolor flag used by LeBron James to signal the start of this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans back in June. Goodwood was honoured to have the Rudge-Whitworth Triennial Cup on display over the weekend, with Ben Collings and Gareth Graham being presented with the Cup at the prize-giving ceremony on Sunday evening.

The Circuit also welcomed the return of some much-loved races including the Freddie March Memorial Trophy on Friday evening, the Lavant Cup, and the Royal Automobile Club TT Celebration, which was made more exciting by a spell of wet weather.

Only at Goodwood: legendary drivers and riders
As ever, the Goodwood Revival welcomed legends from across the world of motorsport. From former Formula 1 drivers, to BTCC champions, Le Mans and Isle of Man TT winners – there was something for every racing fan over the weekend.

Goodwood was delighted to welcome several former Formula 1 drivers including Sir Jackie Stewart who celebrated the 50th anniversary of his third World Championship with a lap of the track in his Tyrrell 006, 2009 World Champion Jenson Button who returned to the Revival for the third consecutive year, nine-time Formula 1 race winner Mark Webber, Formula 1 driver and Sky Sports presenter Karun Chandhok and Goodwood hillclimb record-holder, Max Chilton. Other drivers and riders who joined usover the weekend included Rowan Atkinson, Derek Bell, Romain Dumas, Dario Franchitti, Johnny Herbert, Jacky Ickx, Tom Kristensen, John McGuinness, amongst many others.

    Memorable celebrations
A moving tribute was held for three-time Formula 1 Champion Sir Jackie Stewart over the course of the weekend. With this year marking 50 years since Sir Jackie’s third championship win in 1973, the Goodwood Revival celebrated his career by reuniting him with his championship winning car, the Tyrrell-Cosworth 006.

As at the Festival of Speed earlier in the year, the Revival celebrated Lotus’ 75th anniversary, as 75 cars from across the marque’s history came together for a parade, with Johnny Herbert getting behind the wheel of a 1965 Ford-Lotus 30. In the year which would have seen Carroll Shelby celebrate his 100th birthday, the Revival paid tribute to the legendary driver, car manufacturer and entrepreneur, with a parade which included Shelby’s first race-winning MG-TC and a grid full of Stetson-wearing drivers.

Soaring the skies: best in show
The Freddie March Spirit of Aviation presented by Bonhams|Cars brought together some of the most elegant and rarely seen machines from aviation history. In the magnificent concours d’elegance of pre-1966 aircraft, the 1936 Focke Wulf Stieglitz Red D-EMNN won ‘Best in Show’ as judged by television presenter Noel Edmonds; former Airline Captain Emma Henderson MBE; Squadron Leader Alan Jones, Director of Solent Sky Museum; Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason; Zara Rutherford, the youngest female pilot to fly solo around the world; board member of Carroll Shelby International Aaron Shelby; and Peter Teichman, founder of Hangar 11 Collection.

The Revive & Thrive Village returned this year alongside new vintage fashion and heritage crafts areas. With a packed schedule of talks, demonstrations and workshops across the weekend, the Revive & Thrive areas empowered visitors to breathe new life into second-hand belongings.

Headlining the Revive & Thrive craft content was TV presenter Micaela Sharp and founder of The Bargello Edit, Nerrisa Pratt, who demonstrated how to sew, stitch and salvage second-hand clothes. The Revive & Thrive Workshop saw The Repair Shop’s Dominic Chinea take centre stage, showing visitors how to bring time-worn belongings back to life with traditional upcycling wisdom. Goodwood was also thrilled to welcome back New York Jazz Bandleader and Style Activist, Dandy Wellington, who generously shared his insights into vintage living and led the lineup of the Best Dressed Judges.

    Unmissable moments around the event
Away from the track, the fun continued Over The Road as visitors enjoyed all kinds of festivities from the vintage fairground to the Revival Cinema presented by Sky Cinema showcasing ‘60s blockbusters including GreaseThe Italian Job and Willy Wonka.

New for this year’s event, the Les Skuse Tattoo Parlour on Richmond Lawn proved popular as visitors stepped into a world where the rebellious spirit of the 1960s came alive through the art of tattoos. The free (yet very permanent!) tattoos were available to visitors across the weekend, in addition to a series of temporary transfers. Revival revellers were also taken by surprise as the main entrance transformed into a circus with dazzling performers taking centre stage to celebrate the story of The Greatest Show on Earth.

Famous faces around the event included Francis Bourgeois, Dominic Chinea, Noel Edmonds, Ruth Gemmell, David Gyasi, Alison Hammond, Jodie Kidd, Jason Momoa and Twiggy.
